WHY A LOCAL COACH?
Canals, hills and a parkrun, all on your doorstep.
I'm Steve. My own running started with Couch to 5K in 2018, so I know what it's like to wonder whether you're really "a runner". That quickly became an obsession, and I went on to qualify as an England Athletics coach.
I'm based in nearby Denton and run around Tameside every week. Ashton is a brilliant place to train: three canals meet at Portland Basin for flat, traffic-free miles, Hartshead Pike gives you proper hills, and Stamford Park parkrun lets you measure your progress every Saturday.
It's just me, so the person who writes your plan is the same person who meets you for sessions, answers your messages and adjusts things when work or family life gets in the way.

Running in and around Ashton-under-Lyne
We'll agree where sessions happen based on your goals and what's convenient: near home, near work or on the routes you already run. Ashton has some brilliant places to train.
FLAT · TRAFFIC-FREE · STEADY
Portland Basin and the canal towpaths
The Ashton, Peak Forest and Huddersfield Narrow canals meet at Portland Basin. The towpaths give you flat, traffic-free running towards Manchester, Stalybridge or Hyde, which is perfect for easy runs, tempo work and long runs.
SATURDAYS · 9AM · FREE 5K
Stamford Park parkrun
A free, timed 5K every Saturday in Stamford Park, the 64-acre Victorian park with two lakes on the Ashton and Stalybridge border. It's the ideal way to benchmark your fitness between coached sessions.
HILLS · VIEWS · STRENGTH
Hartshead Pike
At 876 feet, with its landmark tower and views across four counties on a clear day, Hartshead Pike above Ashton is the place for hill repeats and building strength that carries over to every race.
TRAILS · WOODLAND · EASY MILES
Daisy Nook Country Park
Woodland and riverside trails through the Medlock Valley between Ashton and Failsworth, around Crime Lake and the old canal aqueducts. It's great for relaxed off-road running.
Heading further afield? The Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath continues from Ashton through Stalybridge towards Mossley, which is great for longer runs as your fitness grows.
WHO I COACH
Coaching for real runners with real goals
Most of the runners I work with aren't chasing elite times. They want to run with more confidence, stop getting injured, or finally hit a target that's been just out of reach.

Is there a parkrun near Ashton-under-Lyne?
Yes. Stamford Park parkrun is a free, timed 5K every Saturday at 9am in Stamford Park, on the Ashton and Stalybridge border. A faster parkrun is one of the most common goals I coach, and it is a great way to track your progress.
I'm a complete beginner. Is coaching for me?
Absolutely. I started with Couch to 5K myself, and I coach complete beginners right through to marathon runners. Everything starts from where you are now.
Can I combine in-person sessions with online coaching?
Yes. Lots of runners follow an online plan during the week and book occasional 1:1 sessions for technique, hill work or race preparation. Just ask on your free chat.
