If you’re looking for a simple, welcoming way to get active, meet other runners and build consistency into your training, parkrun is one of the best places to start.
It’s free, weekly, and open to everyone — whether you walk, jog or run.
What is parkrun?
parkrun is a free, timed 5km event that takes place every Saturday morning in parks and open spaces around the world.
There’s no pressure on pace or ability — you can go as fast or as easy as you like. The focus is on participation, community and consistency.
How to sign up
Getting started is straightforward:
- Register online (it’s completely free)
- Receive your unique parkrun barcode
- Bring your barcode to any event, anywhere in the world
- Walk, jog or run your 5km
- Get your result emailed afterwards
You only need to register once, and you can use the same barcode at any event globally.
Where can you do parkrun?
parkrun is a global movement, with events taking place in over 20 countries worldwide.
Some of the countries include:
- United Kingdom
- Ireland
- Australia
- South Africa
- United States
- Canada
- Germany
- Japan
- Italy
- Denmark
- Finland
- Austria
…and many more across Europe, Africa, Oceania and beyond.
This means you can take your barcode on holiday and still take part — a great way to stay active while travelling.
parkrun milestones
parkrun celebrates consistency, not speed. As you build up your participation, you’ll reach milestone clubs.
5k milestones:
- 10 (juniors only)
- 25
- 50
- 100
- 250
- 500
- 1000
Junior (2k) milestones:
- 11 (half marathon distance in total)
- 21 (marathon)
- 50 (ultra)
- 100
- 250
When you hit these milestones, you’ll earn a club entry and can order a milestone t-shirt.
Volunteering at parkrun
parkrun simply wouldn’t exist without volunteers.
Every event is organised and delivered by local volunteers — and anyone can get involved. You don’t need any experience, and you don’t need to be a runner.
Common volunteer roles include:
- Run Director – oversees the event and ensures safety
- Marshal – guides participants around the course
- Timekeeper – records finish times
- Barcode Scanner – scans barcodes at the finish
- Finish Tokens – hands out finish positions
- First Timers Welcome – helps newcomers feel at ease
- Course Setup / Close Down – prepares and packs away the course
You can volunteer occasionally or regularly, and each volunteer credit also counts towards milestone clubs.
Why parkrun is worth doing
For runners of all levels, parkrun offers:
- Structure to your week
- A consistent benchmark (great for tracking progress)
- A relaxed environment for speed sessions or easy runs
- A strong sense of community
- A confidence boost for newer runners
For many people, it becomes a weekly habit that supports long-term consistency.
